Autumn term starts tonight!

We're looking forward to welcoming all our new and returning students this evening. The theme for the term is "Musical Foundations", with director Jonathan James going back to the basics of both classical and jazz music traditions. We're also launching our brand new brass ensemble, coached by Tom Taffinder. Lisa Portus joins us to coach a wind quintet and we have a lovely new intern called Rosie from Bristol University Music Department.


Creative Ensemble Skills workshop with NCO

Musicians from Pre-Con Roots will be meeting members of the National Children's Orchestra for the first time to prepare for a work-in-progress sharing for parents and St Monica Trust residents. The focus of the afternoon will be re-working a classic from the English folk tradition, creating new music together and developing ensemble skills.


Summer term starts next week

Summer term for seniors and Roots will be starting up next week! We'll be working towards our summer concert on Wednesday 28th June.

Summer term starts tonight

We're looking forward to welcoming students back this evening: the Roots are now entering their third term and the seniors are developing repertoire from last term in prepation for the summer concert. Current vacancies: jazz drummer, vocalists.


Pre-Con string quartet perform in St George's talk

What's so ‘witty’ about Haydn, what makes Mozart’s music so dramatic, and why Beethoven was such a revolutionary? The Pre-Conservatoire string quartet will provide live demonstrations in Jonathan James' talk at St George's this evening.


Performance anxiety and how to beat it!

Composition Clinic

Next Sunday, 2-5pm at St Monica's, BS9 3UN, we'll be running our first A2/AS-Level Composition Clinic for teachers and students. We'll be looking at how to improve approach, technique and results. All welcome, get in touch for more information!



Concert at St George's, Bristol

Next Wednesday at 7.30pm we'll be taking to the stage at St George's, Bristol to present an evening of classical and jazz music. This exciting concert that will take the audience from Bach to Be-Bop and will also mark the official launch of our new junior programme, Pre-Con Roots!



End-of-term sharing next week!

It's that time again: next Wednesday evening (2nd December) we will be inviting friends and family of Pre-Conservatoire students plus residents from St Monica's to hear what we have been working on this term. The sharing will be in the Chapel at 7:30pm, entry is free.



Masterclass with Bruno Schrecker

Former Allegri Quartet cellist Bruno Schrecker led a masterclass on Ravel's String Quartet in F major before dispensing some words of wisdom to the students about embarking upon a career as a musician: be observant, work hard at listening and love the music you're playing.

This evening we have welcomed nineteen new students across the Senior and Roots programmes. This term we will be covering modes, modernism and Alexander Technique, as well as exploring repertoire from Brahms and Bozza to Nina Simone to Miles Davis.

The Pre-Conservatoire students will be watching world-class musicians in action at the Aurora Orchestra concert tomorrow, and meeting the players in the interval to find out about life as a professional musician.

Masterclass with Miloš Karadaglić

During his recent visit to Bristol with the Brussels Philharmonic, Milos led a masterclass with local guitarists including Pre-Conservatoire guitarist, Maisie. In case you missed it, here's a clip:

Woodwind tutor Imogen Triner is directing 'Music For a Spring Evening', performed by chamber ensemble, Quorum.





A cappella vocal guru, Jen Bell, joined us this evening to teach the singers a song in Bulgarian.

This evening we welcome Guildhall professor of jazz piano, Malcolm Edmonstone for a masterclass on modes. 





Happy New Year! We are getting ready for our spring term, with sessions beginning on Wednesday 14 January. Do get in touch if you would like to join us as we welcome students throughout the year.





We are very excited that members of the Galliard Ensemble will be coming to work with our woodwind students on 1 October, ahead of their concert at St George's the following day. Members of the public are invited to watch the masterclass, and details of the concert can be found here:

What a busy start to the term! New tutors, new students and our new Vocal Program! We're growing every week, which is wonderful news for such a new school. Keep checking our facebook for updates and get in touch if you want to join.




What a wonderful way to end the term! Our students gave a virtuosic evening of entertainment to parents and residents of St Monica Trust. Already looking forward to the new term!




Our jazz tutors, Nick Malcolm and Nick Dover gave a masterclass on jazz and showed off their own improvising skills and technique. It was a great insight into the world of jazz music for our classical pupils. 




International superstar violinist, Chloe Hanslip gave a masterclass to two of our violin students, and even demonstrated her own skills to the pupils. This was a treat for the Bristol Pre-Conservatoire, especially as Chloe was about to perform at the Colston Hall with the Czech National!





John Bacon came along for our open evening for the vocal course which will start in January! A very successful evening - and we even found some of our students have been hiding some wonderful voices. Looking forward to next term already!




Thanks to a powercut this evening, we had an exciting session, including a candlelit performance in the chapel by Program Manager Mary Spender, who is also a professional singer/songwriter. Have a look at the video on our Facebook page.




Incredible performance and talk on Improvisation from Royal Academy graduate James Gardiner-Bateman alongside his pianist George last night. James is off on tour with Joss Stone in the new year!




Thanks to Katherine and Martin from the Aquinas Trio for their Q&A on their education and how to become a professional musician. They also heard the ensembles play and gave tips throughout the rehearsals. A wonderful evening!





We're very happy to have commissioned a piece for woodwind by talented Bristol based composer Richard Barnard.


The World Premiere will be performed on the 4th December 2013 at our end of term concert.

Internationally renowned cellist, Matthew Barley joined us for a lecture and performance on the 25th September '13. He gave the students three top tips on being a professional musician.
